Tucked away in the heart of a cozy small town, the Harris family runs a business that’s the epitome of a mom-and-pop endeavor, radiating warmth and community spirit. Nestled along the K4 highway, which unwinds into the town from the west, a quaint sign heralding “Gypsum Next 13 exits” stands as a beacon of inspiration for what’s affectionately known as the Exit 14 restaurant. It was in the early 1990s when George Frisbee first planted this sign on the town’s fringe, where it has warmly welcomed travelers ever since.
The story of The Exit 14 begins with its founding previous owner, inspired by the welcoming sign and the charm of the local area. The baton of this homely establishment was later passed to Dee and Paul Harris, alongside their son Justin, who infused the restaurant with their family’s heart and soul in May of 2018. With loving hands, they began weaving their own unique tapestry of hometown flavors while cherishing and preserving the famous Pavement Pounder Burger.
The restaurant is a heartfelt homage to the tireless men and women who build and maintain our roads, captured in the tender phrase “Hats off to you.” Within its walls, you’re invited to a feast that feels like it’s been prepared in your own kitchen, amidst an eclectic collection of license plates, street, and road signs that tell tales of journeys near and far.
Pride is taken in serving dishes that are a true reflection of the local bounty, featuring vegetables plucked from the garden out back and meat sourced from neighboring farms.
And then, there’s the legendary “Pavement Pounder” – not just a meal, but an experience. This colossal burger, crafted with six patties, tips the scales at two pounds and stands as a monument to culinary indulgence. It’s a tower of taste, promising to quell the mightiest of appetites with its layers of flavor.
Step into The Exit 14, where every meal is a celebration of community, family, and the simple joys of life’s journey.
